World Water Day is held annually on March 22 as a means of focusing the attention on the importance of fresh water and advocating for sustainable management of freshwater resources. This year – 2013 – is also the year of International Water Cooperation, promoting collaboration among communities and countries in order to solve the challenges of water management.

Clean water is one of our world’s most important natural resources.  As Canadians, we have access to 20% of the world’s fresh water.  However, many countries are not so lucky.  Human conflict, wars, climate change, and over use have left large portions of the world’s population without sustainable access to clean drinking water.

But there are plenty of things we can to do help with water conservation.  While days like World Water Day and Earth Day certainly help to raise awareness to key issues, there are many ways we can help to conserve water on a daily basis.

Daily Water Conservation Tips:

  • When washing dishes by hand, don’t let the water run while rinsing.  Fill one sink with wash water and the other with rinse water.
  • Only use your washing machine and dishwasher when they’re full.  This will help you to save up to 1,000 gallons of water per month!
  • Compost vegetable food waste as much as possible – only use the garbage disposal when it’s absolutely necessary.
  • Keep a pitcher of water in the fridge for cold drinks rather than running the tap to ensure you can enjoy every last drop.  This way, nothing goes down the drain.
  • Monitor your water bill for unusually high use to help discover leaks.
  • Water your lawn and garden in the morning or evening when temperatures are cooler to minimize evaporation.
  • Use a broom instead of a hose to clean your driveway and sidewalk.
  • Shorten your shower by a minute or two and you’ll save up to 150 gallons per month!
  • Fix that leaky faucet!  Picking up a wrench can save you approximately 140 gallons a week.
  • Turn off the water while brushing your teeth and save 25 gallons per month.

These small changes can make a big difference.  To learn more about World Water Day events in your community, visit UN Water.
