The arrival of fall signals delicious pumpkin spiced lattes, changing leaves and comfortable sweaters.  It’s a season that brings out the best in Canada’s natural landscapes, and is the preferred time of year for many Canadians.  But, there’s also a darker side to autumn: the arrival of cold and flu season.

Health Canada estimates that up to one quarter of Canadians suffer from the flu each year.  A viral infection in the nose, throat and lungs, the flu is most commonly spread from person to person through the air – by coughs and sneezes – or by touch – think door handles, computer keyboards and other shared public surfaces.

But there are things you can do to stay healthy this year, and avoid the flu while taking in the best that the autumn and winter months have to offer.  Here are four tips that will help you stay healthy during cold and flu season.

Wash your hands.

Proper hand washing (and lots of it) is one of the best ways to kill germs that spread influenza.  Wash your hands with warm water, and spend at least 10 – 20 seconds lathering both hands – particularly in between your fingers, under rings, and in the space between your thumb and index finger.  If you’re in a public restroom, use a paper towel to turn off the tap.

Get your rest.

The average adult needs 7 – 8 hours of sleep per night.  Without sufficient rest, your mood, memory, and physical health could suffer.  Set a bedtime – and stick to it – to ensure that you’re getting plenty of rest.  You’ll be rewarded with a positive outlook, and better overall health.

Drink plenty of water.

Drinking water helps your body maintain a balance of fluids – and makes it easier for your body to push the bad stuff out.  “Your kidneys do an amazing job of cleansing and ridding your body of toxins as long as your intake of fluids as adequate,” Steven Guest, MD, tells WebMD.  It’ll also help to keep your skin looking healthy and your muscles energized.

 Stay active.

Regular workouts are a great way to fend off the flu.  Whether you hit the gym, or prefer a brisk walk in the outdoors, making time for at least 30 minutes of exercise each day can keep you healthy.

If you do happen to catch the flu, you should recover within 7 – 10 days.  If your symptoms persist, visit your doctor.
