Take February to Heart

february heart month

February is National Heart Month (not to mention it’s also when Valentine’s Day falls), so it only seems fitting for all “affairs of the heart” to take centre stage this month. On a serious note, February is our yearly reminder to treat our hearts well. But this time of the year also presents a more (dare we say?) “lighthearted” opportunity to dig into some little-known facts about our most vital organ.

When two lovers gaze into each other’s eyes, their heart rates synchronize

Granted, this study conducted didn’t involve a significant sample size (less than 100 heterosexual couples), however it still produced a fascinating result: when these couples sat close enough to each other without touching, their heart rates actually synchronized! Perhaps even more interesting to note was the fact that it was the women who tended to adjust their heart rates to their partners’ heart rates.

Cuddling releases natural painkillers

Oxytocin is often referred to as “the love hormone” … and for good reason. It’s the hormone that is released during an embrace or a cuddle, and has been shown to stimulate the body’s natural pain-suppression in the brain, making people more tolerant to pain. Who needs a pill when making your heart feel good can make your body feel good!

It can take just 90 seconds to decide if you have “heart” for someone

It doesn’t take very long for your heart to tell you how you feel about the person you just met – it can happen within 90 seconds to 4 minutes after meeting them. It seems that what you say isn’t as important as what your body language, tone and speed of your voice are conveying.

A good belly laugh is great for your heart

Load up on your jokes, because studies show that a good laugh can cause your blood vessels to expand and contract, increasing your blood flow up to 20%. This promotes healthier blood vessels and helps guard against cardiovascular disease.

Hear, here!

Ever wonder about the origins of the stethoscope? Turns out it was invented by French physician Rene Laennec (1781-1826), when he was uncomfortable placing his ear on some of his more buxom female patients. And as for that “thump thump” we hear, it’s actually the sound made by the four valves of the heart closing.

Thanks a million

Need something to be thankful for? How about the fact that the average heart beats 100,000 times a day, which adds up to 3,600,000 times each year. That’s one seriously incredible machine inside you – and you should be thankful for it!

Women move to a faster beat

A woman’s heart typically beats faster than a man’s. The heart of an average man beats approximately 70 times/minute, while the average woman has a heart rate of 78 beats/minute.

While these fun “heart facts” listed are somewhat trivial, one thing that shouldn’t be made light of, is how you treat your heart. So be kind to it. And know that even if you’re living with heart disease, you can still protect your loved ones with life insurance.
